How to ask a collaborator to share your newsletter post

The day a collaboration goes live is the whole point of the collaboration, and it is also the day most of them quietly underdeliver. Your partner means to share it. Then they cannot find the link, or they do not know what to say about their own work without feeling awkward, and the window closes.

So hand them the post, finished. The link, a caption written to make them look good, and a genuine no-pressure exit. Praising a piece you are in feels like bragging; praising a collaboration someone else framed for you feels easy. Write the caption they cannot comfortably write for themselves.

It is live: Pricing when the client hides the budget

Hi Alena,

Pricing when the client hides the budget just went out to my readers, and it is one of my favorite things I have run on Second Draft. Thank you again, truly.

Early signal is good: three readers have already replied asking where to find more of your writing.

If you would like to point your readers or followers at it, here is everything so it takes ten seconds. The link: https://seconddraft.substack.com/p/pricing-hidden-budget. And a caption you can use, edit, or ignore:

"I wrote a guest piece for Second Draft on the question every freelancer dreads: what is your budget, met with silence. Here is how I price when the client will not say."

Zero pressure. You already did the generous part, and I am glad it exists either way.

Common questions

How do I ask a collaborator to share a newsletter post?

Send the link the day it goes live, include one real early signal like reader replies, and write the caption for them in their voice, ready to paste. Then genuinely release the pressure. The friction of writing about themselves is what stops most partners, so the caption you write for them is the whole game.

When should I send the share ask after publishing?

Within a few hours of the post going out, while it is the newest thing in both your worlds. A share in the first day lands with the algorithmic and social momentum the post already has. A week later it reads as an afterthought and asks them to revive something instead of amplify it.

What if my collaborator never shares the post?

Let it go completely, and do not let it sour the collaboration. Some people never promote, even their own work, and the piece still did its job for both audiences. You made sharing effortless, which is your entire side of it. The partner who did not share this time will remember how graceful you were about it.
